Free Training Event:
Developing Evidence - Based Interventions for Benzodiazepine Use in Recovery Orientated
Treatment
11 & 12 June 2012
Fort William
Trainer:
Dr. Laura Freeman, Clinical Psychologist
Addiction Interventions

About this event:
This free 2 day training event has been organised by Scottish Drugs Forums National Quality Development Team in partnership with Dr. Laura Freeman in response to the need to develop and support evidence-based interventions to address benzodiazepine use in recovery orientated treatment. Dr Freeman holds a respected position as an addiction psychologist and trainer, with previous training being in high demand.

Aims:
Benzodiazepine use, both prescribed and illicit, has long posed significant challenges to alcohol and other drug services in Scotland. While concerns about benzodiazepine use have been highlighted throughout the last forty years, recent trends suggest that benzodiazepine use has actually been increasing amongst the population.

There is an urgent need to explore and develop evidence based strategies for helping people make changes in their benzodiazepine use and address underlying issues of anxiety and problems with sleep.

This course will explore the potential role of psychological and psychosocial interventions in addressing benzodiazepine issues, review the current prescribing strategies for reduction and detoxification, and update participants on the latest research on prescribing strategies.

The first day will focus on applying the information about benzodiazepine use to practice settings. In the second day participants will explore, develop and practice skills-based strategies to help people develop a lifestyle where they are no longer dependent upon benzodiazepine use.

Learning Outcomes:

By attending the workshop, participants will have:

  • Reviewed the physical, psychological and cognitive effects of benzodiazepines and their impact on daily functioning

  • Explored the impact of mixing alcohol and benzodiazepines and the behavioural consequences

  • Analysed the impact of benzodiazepines on the interventions used by Scottish alcohol and other drug services

  • Explored ways to adapt evidence based substance misuse interventions for individuals using benzodiazepines to enhance recovery

  • Practiced anxiety management and relapse prevention strategies adapted to address benzodiazepine use.
